Celebrating Strong Learning Growth
At Prince of Peace Lutheran College, we are committed to continuous improvement while remaining grounded in the values that make our community so special. This year has already brought encouraging signs of growth, exciting developments across our campuses, and a renewed focus on enhancing the experience of every student and family.
One of the highlights has been our 2026 NAPLAN results. We are delighted that every individual student demonstrated learning growth, while our Year 3 students achieved the strongest reading results recorded across the past four years. Strong outcomes in literacy and numeracy, combined with evidence of academic growth across cohorts, affirm the dedication of our students, teachers and families and the decisions made around which programs we implement. Importantly, we are now using increasingly detailed data to refine our teaching practice and target areas for further improvement, ensuring every learner is challenged and supported to reach their potential.
Listening and Responding to Our Community
We know that clear communication matters. Feedback from families has helped us identify areas where our communication systems can be strengthened, and work is already underway to improve the experience for parents. This includes reviewing existing platforms, increasing integration between systems, and exploring ways to boost engagement with Toddle. Our goal is simple: clearer, more consistent communication that supports strong partnerships between home and school.
Welcoming New Students and New Opportunities
Our College community continues to grow, with 14 new students joining us this term. Looking ahead, we are excited about welcoming both domestic and international students, further enriching the cultural diversity and global perspective of our learning community. Growth brings new opportunities for connection, learning and belonging, and we look forward to seeing our community continue to flourish.
Investing in Spaces that Inspire
Across both campuses, improvements continue to take shape. New building signage has been installed, tenders have been released for upgrades to the Junior Campus tuckshop and amenities near OSHC, and plans are proceeding for a striking panelled mural that will add colour, vibrancy and a stronger sense of identity to our surroundings. While some of these improvements may seem small individually, together they help create welcoming spaces that inspire learning, creativity and belonging.
Strength in Our People
Behind every successful school is a committed team of educators and support staff. While staffing changes can sometimes attract attention, what is often less visible is the strong stability within our permanent workforce. The overwhelming majority of permanent staff (87%) continue to serve at Prince of Peace, providing consistency, care; and the focus we have on recruiting for expertise. We remain committed to attracting, developing and retaining outstanding staff who share our passion for helping young people flourish. This year we have a number of people retiring, going on leave, or obtaining promotional positions, which provides opportunities for us to recruit experts.
Thank you to Mr Dougals Giles, our ICT Manager, for his incredible expertise leading the change over to a new learning and management system, and years of support for students with BYOD, firewall protection, and just being there to support our College. We will miss you. We wish Mr Giles, every blessing and success as he moves on to larger horizons (woohooo – leadership at a National level with Flexi schools) and this significant new chapter in his leadership journey.
We are also delighted to welcome Suzanne Daley as our new PoP OSHC Service Leader, commencing on 10 August.
Suzanne brings more than 15 years of experience in early childhood education and care and is passionate about creating safe, engaging and nurturing environments where children feel valued, respected and encouraged to be themselves.
We look forward to the gifts, expertise and care Suzanne will bring to our OSHC community.
Learning Beyond the Classroom
One of the distinctive features of a Prince of Peace education is the way learning extends beyond the classroom and into real-life experiences. By the time this newsletter reaches you, our Year 6 students will have returned from their Canberra camp experience. For many, it was their first opportunity to venture beyond Queensland and engage directly with our nation’s history, democracy and cultural institutions. Experiences such as these broaden students’ perspectives, deepen their understanding of Australia, and foster independence, curiosity and confidence as learners and citizens.
Our Year 9 students have also recently participated in the Mount Binga Outdoor Education experience, which provides rich opportunities to develop resilience, teamwork, problem-solving skills and emotional intelligence in authentic settings. My recent visit to Mount Binga was a personal highlight. When I arrived, our boys had hiked into their campsite and were enjoying a spirited game of cricket, complete with some creative bush ingenuity. Later, we visited the horses and lambs before joining the girls for dinner.
The meal they prepared and served was simply wonderful, but even more impressive was the confidence, responsibility and care they demonstrated throughout the experience. What stood out most was the strong sense of community that had developed.
There was plenty of laughter, rich conversation and genuine support for one another. Moments like these serve as a powerful reminder that some of life’s most important lessons, resilience, gratitude, service, leadership and relationships, are often learned beyond the classroom.
These experiences help shape young people who are not only confident and capable, but also compassionate, connected and prepared to make a positive contribution to the world around them.
Preparing for the Future
Behind the scenes, significant work continues in areas including student safety, privacy, complaints handling, artificial intelligence and policy review. We are also excited by the successful trial of Pixevety, which has the potential to further enhance how we share and celebrate student experiences with families. Together, these initiatives ensure the College remains responsive, innovative and well-positioned for the future.
Leadership During Upcoming Leave
From 20 August to 3 September, I will be on leave and travelling to Japan as my daughter, Jazelle, competes for the Australian team in the Grand Fondo cycling event. During my absence:
- Anne-Marie Schmidt will serve as Acting Head of College.
- Ian Hayne will serve as Acting Head of Campus (Junior).
I thank both Anne-Marie and Ian for their willingness to lead during this time, and ask that you provide them with your full support.

Pedagogical Innovation
The Power of Great Questions
Families often ask how they can build on the learning conversations that begin in the classroom. In schools, we spend a great deal of time thinking about how to encourage students to think more deeply, make connections and explain their reasoning. Interestingly, some of the most effective approaches are not complex. They are simply ways of structuring conversations.
Teachers use questioning strategies to help students move beyond initial responses and think more deeply about ideas. One example is the “Why, Why, Why” approach.
For example:
“Why did that happen?”
Because X happened.
“Why did X happen?”
Because Y was already occurring.
“Why was Y occurring?”
By the third question, students are often exploring causes, connections and deeper layers of understanding that were not present in their first response. The eventual answer is usually far more sophisticated than the original one. It is a simple strategy that can be applied to anything, from a book or current affairs story to a sporting result or something learned at school.
Another useful thinking routine comes from Harvard University’s Project Zero and is known as See, Think, Wonder:
- What do you see?
- What do you think is happening?
- What do you wonder?
These questions encourage students to observe carefully, form interpretations and remain curious. They also remind us that learning is often about exploring possibilities before arriving at conclusions.
Importantly, neither of these approaches requires specialist knowledge. The goal is not necessarily to have the answers. Rather, it is to create opportunities for young people to explain their thinking, justify their ideas and make connections between what they know and what they are learning.
Schools are full of questions. Great classrooms are built on them. By remaining curious, listening carefully, and encouraging children to explain their thinking, families can help create the same culture of inquiry at home. Sometimes the most powerful conversations are not those that provide answers, but those that encourage students to keep exploring the question.

Uniform Shop is moving from North Lakes to Stafford
As part of The School Locker’s transition to its new uniform partner, EDSCO, the Prince of Peace uniform range will move from The School Locker North Lakes to the new EDSCO retail store at Stafford during August.

Junior Campus Uniform Shop Transition Period
To support families during the changeover, our Junior Campus Uniform Shop will continue to operate on the following dates:
- Thursday 6 August: 2:00pm – 4:00pm
- Monday 10 August: 7:30am – 9:30am
- Thursday 13 August: 2:00pm – 4:00pm
- Monday 17 August: 7:30am – 9:30am
EDSCO Stafford Opens – Tuesday 18 August
From Tuesday 18 August, the full Prince of Peace uniform range will be available at EDSCO Stafford, providing families with greater access to stock, extended trading hours, and professional fitting services six days a week.
Closure of the Campus Uniform Shop
The on-campus Uniform Shop will remain open until the end of Term 3, after which it will close permanently. With uniforms available through the Stafford retail outlet, families will benefit from significantly expanded access to uniform purchases and fittings compared with the current campus-based model. Please note that once the campus shop closes, online purchases will incur delivery charges, consistent with arrangements at many other schools.
While the confirmed transition timeline is shorter than originally anticipated, we expect minimal disruption as the change is taking place mid-term.Thank you for your understanding and support as we make this transition.

P&F Executive Message
Welcome to Term 3! We hope everyone had a restful break and is ready for a big and busy term ahead.
Term 3 is a busy one for P&F, with the Family Bush Dance and Father’s Day Stall both coming up. None of it would be possible without the wonderful support of our parent and carer community – whether you’re signing up for a shift, buying a ticket, or simply spreading the word, every contribution helps bring these events to life for our students.
All funds raised through our P&F initiatives go towards the College Wishlist. We currently have an active pledge underway for a birds’ nest swing at our Junior Campus, alongside other 2026 priorities requested by the College: prize money for the Student Pitch Award (winning pitch and Judges’ Choice), and outdoor seating for both the Middle/Senior and Junior Campuses. Every ticket bought, shift worked and stall purchase this term brings us closer to these goals.

Boots on, hats ready – the Prince of Peace P&F Family Bush Dance is coming up on 21 August! Join us for a night of live music, dancing, great food and family fun, all in support of our College Wishlist.

Fancy dressing the part? Bush dance costumes and accessories are available to pre-purchase online and collect on the night.
This is a family event, and children must be supervised by a parent or carer throughout the evening.

Beefa’s Bush Band will keep everyone moving, with special performances from our own Prince of Peace students. No experience needed – just bring your enthusiasm!
Food stalls open from 5:00pm (steak burgers, sausage sizzle, snacks and a dessert bar, with veg, gluten-free and dairy-free options available), the kids’ games area and quiet zone run from 5:00pm–6:30pm, and bush dancing kicks off at 6:30pm and wraps up at 8:30pm. Parents and carers can unwind in our licensed beer and wine garden throughout the evening. Cash and EFTPOS both accepted.

Celebrating Making a Difference
Across the College, we are passionate about growing good humans — children who notice the needs of others, respond with compassion, and understand that even small actions can make a meaningful difference in the world.
SRC Pyjama and Comfortable Clothes Day
This was exactly what our Junior Campus Student Representative Council did. They noticed a need, listened to student voice, and chose to make a difference in the world around them. Through our Pyjama and Comfortable Clothes Day, students had a fabulous opportunity to share compassion, grow in their understanding of others, and see how their actions could contribute to a kinder and more hopeful world.
The money raised supported Doctors Without Borders, an organisation that provides medical care and humanitarian aid to people affected by war, natural disasters and other crises around the world. Plus, it was a whole lot of fun.
Australian Lutheran World Service — Walk My Way
We have also seen this heart for making a difference through our support of Australian Lutheran World Service and Walk My Way. After listening to stories through devotions this past week and taking part in our walking chapel on Friday, students were invited to consider how their own actions, no matter how small, could bring hope and practical care to others.
One of our Year 1 students, Patrick, showed this beautifully by collecting containers through Containers for Change and donating the money raised to Walk My Way. He said he did this “so the children in the video can go to school just like me.”
What a wonderful celebration of little people making a difference in the world around them.
Families who would like to continue supporting this initiative are invited to join the Prince of Peace Community team for the Walk My Way walk on Saturday 8 August.
Year 6 Canberra Trip – Courage Connection and Learning
Our Year 6 students returned from Canberra on last Thursday evening after a wonderful week of learning, exploring and growing together. From visiting Parliament House and Government House to experiencing the Australian Institute of Sport and many other significant sites, the trip provided rich opportunities for students to deepen their understanding of Australia’s history, democracy and national identity.
The journey itself also offered many opportunities to build independence and resilience, as students navigated flying to Sydney, travelling by bus to Canberra, and managing the busy pace of camp life. While the week brought its share of challenges, including some illness among students and staff, our Year 6 students showed great flexibility, courage and positivity throughout.
Students were given the opportunity to participate in a variety of educational programs with a focus on Australia’s history, culture, heritage, and democracy. The Australian Government recognises the importance of all young Australians being able to visit the national capital as part of their Civics and Citizenship education. To assist families in meeting the cost of the excursion the Australian Government is contributing funding to our school in the amount of $90 per student under the Parliament and Civics Education Rebate program towards those costs. The rebate is paid directly to the school upon completion of the excursion and was taken into account when calculating camp charges for families.

In case you missed it, the Tuckshop ordering is now available five days a week! We just need a few more hungry customers to help keep it buzzing.
If lunchbox inspiration disappears by midweek, or the weekend growth spurt has cleared out the pantry, the canteen is ready to step in and save the day.

Celebrating Student Success!
Over the past few months, our Prince of Peace alumni and current students have achieved some amazing sporting success. We are incredibly proud to celebrate some outstanding achievements from members of our College community who continue to pursue excellence in their chosen fields.
Bria Birch Achieves Success in First Interstate Competition
Congratulations to Year 8 student Bria Birch, who recently competed in her first interstate figure skating competition for the season.
Bria travelled to Melbourne to compete in the Preliminary category, where she delivered an outstanding performance, earning 2nd place and achieving a new personal best (PB) score.
This result reflects Bria’s dedication, hard work, and commitment to her sport. Competing interstate is a significant achievement in itself, and to return home with a podium finish and a personal best is a wonderful reward for her efforts.
We congratulate Bria on this fantastic accomplishment and look forward to following her continued success on the ice throughout the season.
Celebrating Success on the International Stage
We are proud to celebrate the outstanding achievement of Year 10 student Monte Morse, who recently competed in the UK National ILCA Championships. Facing a highly competitive field of 90 sailors, Monte finished an impressive 8th overall, an exceptional result on the international stage.
A highlight of the regatta was Monte’s 1st place finish in the final race, earning him a place on a prestigious British Perpetual Trophy. This achievement reflects the dedication, resilience, and countless hours of training Monte has invested in his sport.
Monte’s success is a testament to his commitment and determination, and we are incredibly proud of the way he continues to represent both himself and Prince of Peace with distinction. Following this remarkable result, Monte is now travelling to Denmark to continue competing internationally.
Congratulations, Monte, on this fantastic achievement. We wish you every success in Denmark and look forward to following the next chapter of your sailing journey.
Sam Short Continues to Shine on the World Stage
We are proud to celebrate the achievements of Prince of Peace alumnus Sam Short, who enjoyed a remarkable campaign at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, winning four gold medals in the 400m, 800m and 1500m freestyle events, as well as the 4 × 200m freestyle relay.
Among his many achievements, Sam successfully defended his 1500m Commonwealth Games title, further cementing his place among Australia’s elite distance swimmers.
His success follows an outstanding Australian Trials campaign, where he became the first Australian man since Grant Hackett in 2005 to win the 200m, 400m, 800m and 1500m freestyle titles at a single trials meet.
We congratulate Sam on his continued success and thank him for being an inspiring role model for our students and College community.

District Track and Field Carnival
We just wrapped the District Track and Field Carnival this week. POP had a number of competitors, from both primary and secondary schools competing in the event which was held at the UQ Sports Athletics Centre at St Lucia. Our students performed phenomenally well with a lot of top 3 places achieved over the two day event. Official results will be released early next week which I will share with you in the next edition of POPCORN.

Year 5 & 6 Celebration Service
Sunday 30 August, 9am
Prince of Peace church invites Year 5 & 6 families to our annual Celebration Service. This is a church-led worship with songs, stories, and opportunities for students to engage with a message in meaningful ways, plus a special gift to take home.

Refresh (F5)

Busy families desperately need chances to slow down and connect.
That’s the idea behind “Refresh” – a casual, interactive worship time designed to help families unwind after a full-on week of work and school. Refresh is built on “F5” (named after the key you press to refresh your computer): Family, Friends, Faith, Fun, and Food. (It’s also a good way to remember it happens Friday at 5pm.)
We’ll gather for music, some activities, and then serve a family-style meal. It’s a great way to start your weekend!
Pine Hills Netball Club
NetSetGoPLAY skills program
Pine Hills Netball Club delivers a NetSetGoPLAY skills program each year in Term 4 at the Rosemarie Klingberg netball courts at James Drysdale Reserve. Delivered in a fun and safe environment, the weekly program is delivered by qualified and enthusiastic coaches to ensure all participants, both boys and girls, have an enjoyable experience.
Benefits of the program include improved physical fitness and coordination, the development of social skills through working as a team, enhanced self-confidence and self-esteem, and an introduction to a life-long sport. In our opinion, the best sport!
Registration is now open.
The 8 week program costs $160.
The Queensland Government’s single use Play On! vouchers can be used to cover the full cost of this program. These are available from Monday 27th July.
This year our program commences on Thursday 8th October 2026 and continues until Thursday 26th November
First session: 4:30 – 5:30pm. 5-8 year olds
Second Session: 5:45 – 6:45pm 9-12 year olds
NetSetGo skills
The program consists of three stages; each delivered with the age and development of the players in mind. NSG aims to develop fundamental movement and foundational netball skills. As the program progresses the players will begin to apply their new skills to modified game play.
PLAY skills
The PLAY program is 2-fold. PLAY caters for all 10’s players who have played the winter season and want to maintain and improve their skills over the summer break or new to netball 10’s.
We also support the 11 & 12 year old ‘new to netball’ player. This 8-week program focuses on developing netball skills in preparation for competition games in 2026.
