Term 3 Week 8 Edition |  4 September 2025
Principal’s Message

Shaping the Future of Prince of Peace Together

At Prince of Peace Lutheran College, we are in the midst of a truly exciting season of growth and renewal. Every step forward has been intentional: we are shaping a future-focused College built on Christ-centred values, world-class learning, and a thriving sense of community.

One of the most exciting initiatives has been our Student Leadership Council Pitches, where students develop entrepreneurial skills by presenting innovative ideas for our community to consider. This year, our Year 9 students led the way with a proposal for a College Radio Station—now in development thanks to their creativity, persistence, and teamwork. Other student pitches, including a vegetable garden and a ping-pong table, are also on the way, supported by the P&F and generous sponsors. These projects remind us that our students don’t just imagine the future, they help shape it.

Parents are also central to this vision. Through our PoP Connect pillar, parent representatives are working closely with staff and leadership to explore strengths, opportunities, and creative new ideas. The P&F continues to be alive with energy, bringing forward initiatives that enrich College life. At our next Parent Liaison meeting, we’ll be exploring the exciting idea of a Junior Campus tuckshop for 2026, responding to feedback we’ve heard loud and clear.

Our learning programs are also evolving through PoP Pathways, PoP Connect, PoP Enrich, PoP Active, and PoP X. Informed by leading 2038 workforce research, we are equipping students for a rapidly changing world. We know that many students entering university will change their courses, often at great cost, so our curriculum is designed not just for entry, but for resilience, adaptability, and long-term success. Alongside this, we continue to strengthen opportunities for trades, VET courses, and extensions for high-achieving students.

On top of all this, our facilities continue to grow with new learning spaces opening soon, innovative playgrounds on the Junior Campus, and additional seating across the Middle and Senior Campuses, thanks to the generosity of our P&F.

But as exciting as this future is, we cannot do it alone. A College thrives when its community is united in respect, trust, and shared purpose. With over 660 students, 1,200 parents, and 100 staff across two campuses, it is natural that challenges will arise from time to time. When they do, we ask, please choose the pathway of open, respectful dialogue.

We are here for you: myself as Head of College, together with Mrs Anne-Marie Schmidt (Head of Campus-Junior) and Mrs Coreta Lennon (Acting Head of Campus-Middle and Senior). We are always ready to listen, support, and work through concerns.

What does not help our students or our community is anonymous negative posting on social media. While it can feel like a quick outlet, it risks undermining the incredible work of staff, parents, and students who are investing so much into building a stronger future. More importantly, it does not model the respect, courage, and grace we hope to instil in our children.

So here is my call to action: stand proudly behind your voice. Be part of the conversation. Reach out directly when you have concerns. Join a parent group, connect through P&F, or meet with one of us. Our College is stronger when voices are shared openly, honestly, and respectfully.

Together, we are building something remarkable at Prince of Peace. Let us set the tone as a community of hope, service, courage, and grace, for our students, for one another, and for the generations to come.

The Voice Summit – A Celebration of Courage, Creativity and Connection!

Our recent Voice Summit was a resounding success, showcasing the incredible talent, innovation and confidence of our students. From the first pitch to the final applause, the energy in the room was electric as students shared bold ideas, thoughtful solutions and inspiring visions for the future.

Each presentation was a testament to the courage it takes to step up, the creativity to think differently and the collaboration that makes our College community shine.

A special congratulations to our winners, whose pitches stood out for their clarity, originality and impact. Your voices truly made a difference!

1st : Edith + Elise in 3/4KS Containers for Change Recycling Project that helps generate further income for student led initiatives

2nd : Kayleigh, April and Avril in Year 8Gathering Grounds Pre-Order App

3rd : Travis and Olivia in 3ANBig Storage Container for outdoor play items

We did of course also have the wonderful opportunity of hearing what students want in so many other areas and we will action some of these ideas too! The Summit highlighted what makes Prince of Peace unique empowering young people to lead, inspire and shape the world with hope, service, courage and grace.

Yours in Christ,

Dr Susan Carter

A Fond Farewell from our Business Manager

As I prepare to leave my role as Business Manager, I want to express my deep gratitude to the entire College community.  Over the past two years, it has been a privilege to serve in this position and work alongside such dedicated and beautiful staff.

Together as a team, we have achieved great things, and I have been proud to contribute to revitalising the College though strengthening our facilities and future planning.  A personal highlight for me has been working collaboratively with Darren Moyle our Facilities Manager to deliver the Middle and Senior Campus – Tuckshop – watching the fully fitted-out container being craned into place was not just exciting, but a true symbol of what can achieved through vision and collaboration.

I would particularly like to thank our grounds and facilities staff, who ensure our College is always safe, welcoming and cared for; our IT team, who keep us connected and supported every day, and especially the Administration and Business office staff, whose dedication and teamwork have been invaluable to me.  I will truly miss my staff who have always gone above and beyond for me and the College.

What I will miss most is the sense of community that makes this College so special.  Thank you for welcoming me, supporting me, and sharing this chapter with me.  I leave with many fond memories, friends and great confidence in the future of the College.

With appreciation and best wishes.

Donna Appelman
Business Manager

Spotlight on PoP Staff!

This fortnight, we invite you to get to know another of our dedicated teaching staff just a little better.

Natalie Skinner — Year 1 Teacher

Joined Prince of Peace Staff: January 2023

What is something you’ve loved or learned during your time at Prince of Peace?
I love learning about the students I have had in Year 1 every year. Every child has a unique set of skills, interests and way of learning, and it’s so wonderful to get to know these with each new class.

What is something about Prince of Peace that you think sets it apart from other schools?
The community- the teachers here are second to none and have given me so much support over the years. The students and families are welcoming and friendly and you really feel like you are part of a community. I love walking around the school and seeing my students from previous years, it always brings a smile to my face!

What is one fun or surprising fact about you that people might not expect?
All of my students know this fact well and have seen lots of pictures, but others may not know — I have a beautiful English Mastiff named Sterling and he weighs 105kg. He might be the biggest dog in Brisbane!

What’s one phone app you couldn’t live without – why?
Kindle and Audible! I am a big fiction reader and audiobook listener, and I read about 1-2 books a week.

Celebrating Community at Prince of Peace

At Prince of Peace, our community events are about much more than fun — they are opportunities to live out our shared values of connection, community, learning, and resilience. Whether it’s students experiencing their first overnight adventure at the Year 2 Sleepover, families sharing laughter and creativity at the Father’s Day Breakfast, or the whole campus celebrating culture and language on Spanish Day, each experience helps our young people grow in confidence, build stronger relationships, and discover the joy of learning together.

Year 2 Sleepover – Building Community and Confidence

The Year 2 Sleepover was a big success, filled with fun, friendship, and new experiences. For many students, this was their first time spending a night away from home with classmates, an important step in building resilience and independence.

The evening included games, activities, and of course a shared pizza dinner before everyone settled in for the night. These experiences help children grow in confidence, develop teamwork, and prepare for the bigger adventures to come in future years.

What the students said:

  • Miles — At the Year 2 camp, I loved having my friends Hugh and Diego to sleep next to.  I also loved all the food that the parents made for us.
  • Shourya — I had a great day at the Year 2 camp and one of the things I loved the most was that I got to sleep next to my friends.  I also liked the pizza and the new beebots.
  • Esther — I loved camp so much! I love that we ate pancakes for breakfast and the game of kahoot in the afternoon was so fun! I got some things wrong, but it was so fun playing this game. I absolutely loved the cordial. For a minute I thought it was juice! The sausages for lunch were so good, and the best thing was the campfire cakes we made. I couldn’t eat it all and saved some for later. It was strange not doing school work – I kind of wished that we could do school work as well, because I love doing everything at school! Camp was the best ever and so much fun.
  • Quillan — The best part was when we got to make and eat the campfire cakes because it was so delicious. Eating the pizza and watching the movie was really good. I loved playing tenpin bowling in the shed and getting our glow sticks and lights to run around with. We were not doing learning which was fun!

Events like this don’t happen without the commitment and care of our teachers and staff. Their time, energy, and organisation made the evening possible, and we thank them for providing such a positive and memorable experience for our Year 2 students.

As our students took this important step in growing their independence, our wider community also came together to celebrate the important role of fathers and father figures.

Father’s Day Breakfast – Dads, Donuts and Design

What better way to start the day than with a donut for breakfast? Our Father’s Day Breakfast was full of smiles as dads, grandads, and father figures joined their children for a morning of fun and connection.

After enjoying coffee and donuts together, families took on design challenges using playdough and toothpicks — with plenty of laughter and creativity on display. These simple activities created big moments of joy and reminded us of the importance of spending time together.

The morning finished with the opportunity for dads to step into classrooms and join their children in activities, giving a special glimpse into the learning that happens each day at Prince of Peace.

Just as this event reminds us of the strength of family connections, Spanish Day invited us to look outward and embrace the connections we share across cultures and languages.

La Tomatina – Spanish Day: Celebrating Culture and Language

This Friday we look forward to our annual Spanish Day, a much-loved tradition on the Junior Campus. It is a time for our community to come together and celebrate culture, language, and learning in fun and engaging ways.

Learning another language is about more than just words — it’s also good for the brain. Research shows that learning a second language strengthens memory, improves problem-solving skills, and builds mental flexibility. Of course, learning a language is not always easy, and that challenge itself creates valuable opportunities for growth. It teaches persistence, resilience, and the confidence to try new things — skills that benefit our students well beyond the classroom.

This year our theme is La Tomatina. Students are encouraged to wear a plain white t-shirt for the day (don’t worry — the same shirt can also be worn later this term at the Colour Fun Run).

A very special thank you to Mrs Arribas and our Spanish-speaking families who join us for this celebration and help bring the day to life.

Schedule for the Day

  • 8:30 am – Chapel
  • Spanish activities: Students will rotate through eight different learning experiences across the day.

Be Blessed

Junior School Leaders Step Into Parliament House

Yesterday was a truly memorable day for our Junior School Leaders, as they proudly represented Prince of Peace Lutheran College at Queensland’s Parliament House in Brisbane.

Our Junior Campus student leaders Matilda and Aaron, together with Dr Carter, were warmly welcomed by the Honourable Tim Mander, Member for Everton, who personally guided them through the historic halls of Parliament. The tour was both inspiring and eye-opening, giving our young leaders a unique glimpse into how decisions are made that shape our communities and our state.

Adding to the excitement, our students joined other school leaders for a special lunch inside Parliament House. The atmosphere was buzzing as students shared ideas, experiences, and their hopes for the future while connecting with peers from across Queensland.

The visit was not only a chance to learn about government in action, but also a powerful reminder of the role young people will play in shaping the future. Our Junior School Leaders shone brightly as ambassadors of Prince of Peace, confident, curious, and courageous.

This experience will no doubt stay with them as they continue their own leadership journeys, inspired by the privilege of walking the corridors of democracy.

Gardiner Chess Competition Success

On Tuesday 2 September, several students from the PoP Chess Club proudly represented our school at the Gardiner Chess Competition, held at Wilston State Primary School.

It was a fantastic day of strategic thinking and friendly competition!

A huge congratulations to Oliver Dell, who achieved 1st place as an individual in Division C. Adding to the success, PoP Chess Team 2 — consisting of Oliver Dell, Sienna Stretch, Yee Shin Liew, and Isaac Ooge secured an outstanding 1st place in the Team Competition for Division C.

We also commend our other competitors — Max Ooge (Division A), Camille Coote, Oliver De Brabender, and Viyan Ravaz (Division C), who all performed admirably and displayed excellent sportsmanship throughout the day.

A big thank you to our wonderful parents for transporting and supporting our students.

Congratulations to all participants for representing PoP with skill, respect, and enthusiasm!

We are so Proud of our Community of Learners

What a term we have had on the Junior Campus at Prince of Peace. This Term has been a celebration of community and learning, jam-packed with opportunities to come together as a whole school learning and playing together.

NAPLAN results released this Term, highlight our commitment to continuous improvement with Prince of Peace’s mean being above State averages. Furthermore, our student reporting performance in English and Mathematics from Semester 1, highlights the success of our students and rewards their efforts in learning. ICAS assessments have finished for 2025, and we look forward to further celebrating the achievement of our students. These assessments in English, Mathematics, Science and Digital Technologies are designed to recognise academic excellence asking students to apply classroom learning to new contexts using higher-order thinking and problem-solving skills.

National Science Week and Book Week were a success at Prince of Peace. These events empower all our community and allow educators to seamlessly integrate literacy and science as an essential thread woven through the curriculum. They enhance classroom learning objectives and student engagement and of course fun! I want to take the time to thank you for your efforts in supporting our activities and events. Also, I want to thank all our educators, a special thank you to Melanie Burke our amazing Library technician, who was also instrumental in the success of book week. If you haven’t seen our Library window yet, come and check it out.

Although I need to admit my bias here, we believe it rivals any Myer Christmas windows.

Science Street Incursion with Year 3

This week our Year 3 students were absolutely buzzing with excitement during the Street Science Incursion! The Chapel was transformed into a lively laboratory as students explored heat energy, temperature changes, solids and liquids, and even how materials can change state. With plenty of hands-on experiments, there were gasps, giggles, and wide-eyed moments of discovery. The children loved making predictions, testing their ideas, and seeing science come to life right before their eyes. It was a brilliant morning of learning, laughter, and sparking curiosity about the world around us!

Year 6 Transition Catch-Ups with Mr Smith and Mrs Lennon

During Weeks 6 and 7, Mr Robert Smith and Mrs Coreta Lennon spent time at the Junior Campus meeting with our Year 6 students and their families. These informal catch-ups provided a wonderful opportunity for students and parents to ask questions about Senior School and to share their thoughts on the transition to the Middle & Senior Campus.

The questions raised were thoughtful and engaging, giving Mr Smith and Mrs Lennon valuable insights into how best to support our students as they prepare for this exciting new stage in their learning journey. One thing that became very clear was that our Year 6 students have a real passion for Mathematics!

We look forward to continuing these conversations in Term 4, with the next round of catch-ups scheduled for Tuesday 14 October from 1:00pm to 4:15pm. A SOBS booking link will be made available for parents to secure a time for these sessions.

We are excited to continue walking alongside our Year 6 students and families as they prepare for a smooth and confident transition into Senior School.

North Brisbane Chess Tournament at PoP

On Thursday 21 August (Week 6), Prince of Peace Lutheran College had the pleasure of hosting the North Brisbane Chess Tournament at our Middle & Senior Campus.

This tournament forms part of the Australian Interschool Chess Tournament, with the Queensland chapter organised by Gardiner Chess, a Gold Coast–based chess coaching school licensed by the Chess Association of Queensland (CAQ). The structure sees winners of each regional tournament progress to the Queensland State Finals, and from there, the overall champion represents Queensland at the Australian Schools Chess Finals Championship.

This year, PoP welcomed over 250 students from a variety of state and independent schools to compete in the Term 3 round. We also had the privilege of hosting this same event last year, and Gardiner Chess has expressed the hope that PoP will continue to be the regular venue for the Term 3 tournament into the future.

Our PoP Chess team performed strongly, achieving a 50% success rate in their games—a commendable result given that chess is not currently part of the curriculum and this is only our second year competing at interschool level. Our team is young, made up largely of enthusiastic Year 7 and 8 students, with three Year 9s, one Year 10, and two Year 11s rounding out the group. A special mention goes to Tim Pingel, who was awarded a ribbon for outstanding performance on the day.

The PoP Chess Club continues to grow, and we look forward to building on this momentum. Chess is a wonderful mind sport that sharpens logic, calculation, and cognitive skills, nurturing the intellectual development of our young people.

Year 12 Mock Exam Block

Our Year 12 students are nearing the end of their Mock Exam block, and we want to take a moment to congratulate them on their dedication, focus, and perseverance throughout this important period.

The Mock Exams are a significant milestone, giving students the opportunity to practise under exam conditions, refine their strategies, and identify areas to strengthen before the final external assessments later this year. While it can be a challenging time, our Year 12s have approached these exams with maturity and determination, demonstrating the resilience and commitment that will serve them well beyond school.

We are incredibly proud of the effort each student has shown, and we encourage them to take a moment to recognise how far they have come on their journey. With the support of their teachers, families, and peers, we are confident they are well on the path to finishing their school years strongly.

Keep up the excellent work, Year 12, you’ve got this! As you continue this journey, may you be encouraged by the words of Philippians 4:13: “I can do all things through Christ who gives me strength.”

NISSA Winter Season

We are now into the final few weeks of the NISSA winter season. B division teams are entering the semi finals this week, with grand finals to be played in Week 9. Division A teams have one more round to go before they begin their finals campaign. We have a number of teams in contention, with this week’s fixtures being pivotal. Best of luck to all teams!

NBIS Gala Day – Ultimate Disc

Last Friday, 25 Year 11 and 12 students participated in the Ultimate Disc NBIS Gala Day at the South Pine Sports Complex. PoP has been associated with this competition since its inception in 2023. The competition runs a round robin format, with students being responsible for the running of the day. This year, we sent two Ultimate Disc teams to compete. Both teams had an exceptional day, notching up some good wins and some tight losses. Overall, we finished in 7th and 8th position, with a total of 14 teams participating. A great achievement, particularly as there were teams that had state and national players representing for their schools.

While the winners of the day are recognised, the most coveted trophy is the Fair Play Award. This award is all about showing respect to your opponents and the referees, playing fairly and being inclusive and kind to everyone on the playing field. Each team assesses their opponents after each game in terms of these factors. PoP has walked away from every NBIS Gala day previously with one of these awards. This year was no exception, with PoP B taking home the trophy. Well done to both teams!

Met North Track and Field

The Met North Track and Field Carnival was held last week at the Queensland State Athletics Centre (QSAC). PoP sent a number of students to the two-day event, with some exceptional results being achieved. In particular, Zoe Bowman is to be commended for her 3rd place in Javelin! Special mention to Hannes Forbes-Schutz who has qualified for the State Championships in the 2000m Steeplechase! Fantastic results! Well done to all athletes that attended! Results are listed below.

Zoe Bowman — 3rd Javelin

Lottie McKinnon — 10th Shot Put

Mackenzie Brown — 9th Shot Put

Armaan Narayan — 11th 100m, 10th 200m, 10th 400m

Colin Shaner — 16th 100m

Tyson Hulcombe — 13th 100m, 11th Discus

Brendon Coupe – 9th Discus

Students have been working in their class groups supported by their Pastoral Care and ARTS staff members, to build ideas on a set theme, “Unity in Community” including a range of required elements. A select group of Year 12 students are coming in to adjudicate the class presentations based on specific criteria including inclusion, creativity, talent, cohesion, resourcefulness, capture of the theme and inclusion of all of the required elements (a circle, a song, scripted dialogue, quote, unison move, conflict resolution, focus and use of the space).

The winning class will receive their class name on a commemorative plaque which will be on display in the College. This is a new initiative replacing the year 8 musicals of past years and the students have worked exceptionally well and hard to create three amazing responses to the task. It will be another great opportunity to witness the strength and vivacity of the Arts at work at PoP.

Stay tuned for more…
