Principal’s Message

Faith, Resilience and Partnership – Together we create our community

In recent months, Lutheran schools across Queensland have continued to shine academically, with many ranking among the highest-performing private schools in the state. This success underscores our deep commitment to “inspired learning for life,” cultivated through strong faith foundations, ongoing innovation, and community collaboration. Our College has intentionally been shaping our teaching and learning thanks to the College Community feedback from parents, students and staff provided in the 2024 MMG survey which shaped the strategic direction for 2025 to 2030.

Within our world, change has become part of everyday life. At times, it stretches us and brings discomfort.

Yet it is in these moments that meaningful growth occurs. Whether it is navigating a temporary oval closure, grappling with a challenging concept, or patiently reminding your child for the fifth time about their lunch on the bench. These everyday experiences shape resilience, courage, and character.

As we head into the coming weeks, let’s:

  • Carve out short spiritual “breath spaces” in our routines, to ground ourselves and model faith for our young people.
  • Strengthen connections between school and home. sharing stories, prayers, and learning journeys.
  • Celebrate efforts and resilience, both big and small and support our children through discomfort and growth.
  • Let’s appreciate our teachers so they feel connected to the work they do feeling their value and encourage one another.

At Prince of Peace, we know that partnership in learning is not simply an idea; it is a shared responsibility. The strength of our community lies in how we actively live this out through encouragement, consistency, and a common vision for our young people. Please keep nurturing the seeds of faith, resilience, and partnership in your hearts and homes. Together, we shape our community to flourish in life and spirit.

“Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up” (Galatians 6:9).

May you be encouraged and may our community continue to grow in grace and strength this term.

Blessings and gratitude to you all.

Pedagogical Innovation

This year, the College has introduced a new position—Deputy: K–12 Pedagogical Innovation—and I am delighted to be joining the community in this role.

My work is centred on supporting teacher growth and teaching quality across the College, with the goal of improving outcomes for every student. This involves collaborating closely with staff across Prep to Year 12 in a range of ways, including:

  • Leading and designing professional learning for teachers
  • Supporting classroom observation and coaching to strengthen practice
  • Contributing to the development of the College’s teaching and learning framework
  • Deepening staff capability in using student achievement data to inform planning
  • Growing digital literacy for both students and staff
  • Building understanding of how tools such as artificial intelligence (AI) can be used responsibly to support learning

While some of this work happens “behind the scenes,” its impact is very much focused on the classroom—ensuring that every student experiences high-quality, engaging and appropriately challenging learning.

A key part of this role is also looking ahead. Education is evolving rapidly, particularly in areas such as digital technologies and AI, and our approach is to engage thoughtfully and responsibly—ensuring that innovation strengthens, rather than replaces, effective teaching and learning practices.

In future newsletters, I will be sharing snapshots of this work in action. This will include how we are beginning to explore AI in our Toddle Learning Management System, the development of our teaching and learning framework, and how we are supporting students to become confident, capable, and independent learners.

I look forward to working in partnership with our families as we continue to support the learning and growth of every student at the College.

It was wonderful to see so many students embracing the occasion, proudly dressed in their Maroon and Blue, and sharing in the spirit of the day. A great sense of fun and community was on display… and of course, Go Queenslander!

There’s something special about the whole community gathering under the open sky, kids running around on the Junior Campus Oval, and everyone settling in together to watch The Lorax, a classic and meaningful story. Monte Prepares for the World Championships

Over the years we have watched Monte, now in Year 10, grow in his success and passion for his sport of sailing. Beginning his journey on the water at just five years old, Monte has consistently demonstrated dedication and a drive to improve. From early success at his first Queensland State Championships through to strong performances at local, state and national regattas, his commitment has been evident every step of the way.

Monte’s recent achievements mark an exciting milestone in his sporting journey. After progressing through the Australian Optimist Development Squad and competing internationally, he transitioned into the ILCA class, where he has already achieved outstanding results, including a top 10 finish at the 2026 ILCA National Championships and a podium placing at the Queensland State Championships. We are incredibly proud to share that Monte has now been selected to represent Australia at the 2026 ILCA 4 Youth World Championships in Aarhus, Denmark, an exceptional honour and a testament to his hard work.

As Monte prepares to compete on the world stage, there are significant costs involved in attending an event of this level. If you would like to support Monte in this exciting opportunity, contributions can be made via his GoFundMe page to assist with equipment, coaching and travel expenses. We congratulate Monte on this remarkable achievement and wish him every success as he represents his club and his country with pride.

P&F Special Meeting Notice – 10 June 2026

The P&F warmly invites all parents and friends to attend a Special Meeting to consider an important update to our governance structure.

📅 Date: Wednesday, 10 June 2026
🕖Time: 7:00pm
📍Location: Junior Campus Library (in-person)
🏫Immediately afterwards: P&F General Meeting

Purpose of the Special Meeting

The meeting will consider a proposal to replace the current P&F Constitution (2009) with a new Terms of Reference.

What is a Terms of Reference (ToR)?

A Terms of Reference (ToR) is a document that outlines how a group operates and makes decisions.

For the P&F, the ToR would:

  • Define the purpose and role of the P&F within the College community
  • Set out how decisions are made, including voting processes
  • Clarify roles and responsibilities (e.g. Executive, coordinators, members)
  • Outline how the P&F works in partnership with the College
  • Provide guidance on meetings, funding priorities, and governance processes

In simple terms, it acts as a practical guide for how the P&F functions day-to-day, replacing the more formal and outdated Constitution with a structure that is easier to follow and adapt as needed.

How you can participate

The proposed Terms of Reference (ToR) is shared with this notice. We encourage all parents to:

  • Review the document in advance: Proposal here.
  • Provide feedback via the linked form: here.

The feedback window is now open and closes Friday 5 June 6:00pm, with early feedback desired.

What will happen at the Special Meeting

(Quorum of 10 members required)

  • Key points and any previously submitted questions will be discussed
  • Additional questions may be raised during Any Other Business
  • Amendments to the ToR can be proposed and voted on during the meeting
  • The final version of the Terms of Reference (as amended, if applicable) will then be put to a vote
  • Voting progress:
  • All decisions will be made by a simple majority vote
  • In the event of a tie, the P&F President holds a casting vote

This is an important opportunity to help shape how the P&F operates into the future, and all members are encouraged to attend.

We look forward to your participation in this important discussion.

Thanks,

P&F Executive Team

National Sorry Day – Teralba Park Service

I had the privilege of attending the National Sorry Day service at Teralba Park on Tuesday alongside representatives from our Junior Campus and Senior Campus including our Year 6 leaders and a group of Year 5 students. It was a deeply sobering experience as we listened to stories and personal accounts that spoke of loss, grief, and the lasting impact of past injustices.

At times, it was difficult to hear the experiences shared, reminding us of the pain carried by individuals, families, and communities. Yet, it was also a powerful opportunity to pause, reflect, and renew our commitment to reconciliation and respect.

As we look ahead to Reconciliation Week, this experience serves as a timely reminder of our Term 2 value of Compassionate — encouraging us to listen with empathy, seek understanding, and act with care towards others in our community.

Compassion begins with small but vital steps in the way our children learn to understand and care for others. Thank you for partnering with us as we walk alongside them in this important work.

Prayer For Christian Unity

Last week, our Junior and Senior Campus Ministry and Outreach Captains were privileged to attend the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity service at St Stephen’s Cathedral, joining students and Christian leaders from across Brisbane.

It was a powerful reminder that, as Christians, we are called to walk together in humility, love and faith, one body, one Spirit, united in Christ.

We are so proud of our student leaders for representing our College and living out our faith through service, connection and community.

Upcoming events

Term 2 is finishing with a flourish, and I hope to see you in and around the College at some of the following events:

  • 28, 29 and 30 May — Charlie on the Chocolate Factory
  • 5 June — K to Year 2 Sports Day
  • 5 June — P to 12 Church Movie Night
  • 8 June — Student Summit at MSC 3:30 PM
  • 12 June — Year 3 to Year 6 Athletics Carnival
  • 17 June — P to Year 6 Learning Showcase and Arts Night from 3:20 PM

Year 4 Camp

Last week, our Year 4 students embarked on an exciting and memorable camp at Luther Heights Youth Camp, nestled at the beautiful Mt Coolum. With the sun shining brightly, spirits were high as students set off on Wednesday morning, filled with anticipation for the adventures ahead.

After settling in and enjoying lunch, students quickly immersed themselves in a range of thrilling activities. From soaring through the air on the flying fox to testing their strength and determination on the koala climb, working collaboratively during rogaining to navigate and solve challenges, and experimenting with Mini Catapults, there was something for everyone. These experiences gave students the chance to step outside their comfort zones, show courage, try new things, and build self-belief.

As evening arrived, the energy continued. The night was filled with lively games organised by the Luther Heights staff. There was plenty of laughter, movement, and enjoyment, making it a fantastic way to end the first day.

Thursday began bright and early, with students eager to continue their adventure. Throughout the day, they showed great courage and resilience as they embraced the camp’s “challenge by choice” philosophy—encouraging each child to extend themselves just a little further. It was wonderful to see so many students supporting one another and celebrating successes together.

In the afternoon, everyone headed down to the beach for fresh air and group activities. Students took part in a creative sand-building competition, where they were tasked with constructing a mode of transportation. The beach came alive with imaginative designs and enthusiastic collaboration.

That evening, students settled into their sleeping bags for a special movie night, enjoying The BFG—a story they had previously explored in class. It was a relaxing way to wind down after such an active day.

Friday morning arrived all too soon, and after packing up, students joined in a big game on the oval. This final activity highlighted cooperation, teamwork, and strategy, bringing the experience to a wonderful close. Before heading home, there was also time to enjoy quieter options such as beading, drawing, colouring, and handball.

When reflecting on their camp experience, students wrote:

I learned how to go upside down on a zipline and have enough courage to do it.

Something I found challenging was trying to push myself past my comfort zone in Koala Climb.

I learned that a carabiner is something used in ziplining and rock rock climbing, regaining is a scavenger hunt and how to make a catapult.

One of my favourite things about camp was ziplining because I felt like I was flying.

I learned that you’re better in a team.

The Year 4 camp was a wonderful opportunity for students to grow in confidence, strengthen friendships, and develop important life skills. It was truly a memorable experience filled with laughter, learning, adventure, and many moments of courage. We would also like to extend our sincere thanks to the parent helpers who generously gave their time to support this experience—your assistance was greatly appreciated.

National Sorry Day Ceremony

Our College Captains and Ministry and Outreach Captains represented Prince of Peace at the National Sorry Day Ceremony on 26 May.

The experience provided an important opportunity to listen, learn, and reflect on the impact of past government policies on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

Students also laid a wreath as part of the ceremony, honouring those affected and acknowledging the ongoing journey of reconciliation.

Gardiner Chess

Last week, several of our Middle and Senior Campus students participated in the Gardiner Chess Competition, hosted here on campus.

Students from across Brisbane competed in what proved to be a very strong field, with some players competing at master level.

Our students performed admirably, achieving an overall result of 50%, which is a commendable outcome in such a competitive environment. Congratulations to Tim Pingel, Thomas Cormack, and Brendan Shaner, who were each awarded merit ribbons in recognition of their outstanding performances.

Christian Unity Service

Our Ministry and Outreach Captains recently attended the Christian Unity Service at St Stephen’s Cathedral as part of the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity. The Service brought together Christian leaders and students from across Brisbane, highlighting the power of coming together in faith, prayer, and shared purpose.

Through this experience, our students witnessed the richness of Christian tradition and the importance of humility, love, and unity in a world often marked by division. It was a meaningful opportunity to represent Prince of Peace and reflect on how we can live out our faith in community with others.

Blessings,

Supporting Student Academic Success

As we approach the heavy assessment period of the term, we encourage students to maintain positive learning habits and attitudes to set them up for success.

Every day counts. Attendance has a direct and cumulative impact on achievement. Missing school leads to learning gaps that can grow over time, while regular attendance strengthens engagement, wellbeing and long-term outcomes.

Study Habits: Work smarter

Research shows that how students study matters most. Effective strategies such as retrieval practice, spaced revision and applying learning significantly improve long-term retention. At school, teachers explicitly teach these approaches. At home, parents can reinforce them by encouraging regular revision, quiet study routines and reflection on learning.

Effective strategies include:

  • Active recall / retrieval practice: Test oneself, close notes and write everything one remembers; this strengthens memory more than re-reading or highlighting.
  • Use practice questions and exams: Apply knowledge under test-like conditions
  • Spaced revision: Study in short sessions across the week rather than cramming
  • Teach someone else: Explaining learning helps deepen understanding
  • Break tasks into chunks: Work in focused blocks (e.g. 25–30 minutes)
  • Mix subject matter (interleaving): Rotate topics and types of questions to improve retention and understanding.
  • Use visuals and summaries: Mind maps, diagrams and summary notes help organise thinking

These strategies promote long-term learning, confidence and independence, and are far more effective than passive approaches like highlighting or re-reading. More information regarding these strategies can be found here: https://lsc.cornell.edu/how-to-study/studying-for-and-taking-exams/effective-study-strategies/

Organisation: Plan study sessions and assignment work

Student Assessment Calendars for each year level are available in Toddle, search School Announcements/Year <insert year level> Term 2 Student Assessment Calendar. Students are encouraged to use the assessment calendar and a planner to schedule when to work on assignments and when and what to study. This will help students to balance their commitments and reduce stress. We encourage students to reconsider their work during heavy assessment periods and to ensure they are maintaining adequate sleep routines for optimal brain function and wellbeing.

By working together, we create the conditions for every student to succeed. With strong attendance, effective habits, thoughtful organisation and a positive mindset, supported by both school and family, our students are well positioned to thrive now and into the future.

Blessings,

Nardine Price
